Let's Blame Drinking Instead of the Serial Killer
The JS has a story today about "foul play" being a factor in the recent murder of Luke Homan whose body was found in the Mississippi river. When I first read this line:
"Homan is 8th found in river since '97"
I thought, hooray, they've figured out that there's a much larger problem.
But I was wrong. Drinking is to blame. Partying is to blame. Let's turn it into something we can create groups of the already converted who will vow not to party hearty.
People. Eight murders in the last 10 years, all the same age range, all male, all in the river?????
It's a serial killer.
If the Journal had a whit of sense and dug deeper or all the things that the media claims to be of benefit for us, they'd have raised it.

The Mississippi River IS the 'serial killer.'
I've had to canoe upstream on that sucker. Until you've done that, you have no idea how powerful that current really is...
I have to agree with dad29. That is a powerful river. I have two other reasons to doubt this is a serial killer. First, some of these guys have been very big. For someone to kill even a drunken large male would require that some sort of additional injuries or evidence of a struggle be left behind for investigators. Second, over the last thirty plus years, that river has taken something like 23 drunk males. Were those others from years ago also the work of a serial killer, or is this just a clear pattern of drunken individuals playing a dumb game with a deadly river?
My dad in Chippewa Falls is leaning towards the serial killer idea, too, but I reminded him that the Chippewa River in Eau Claire has been known to take the life of the occasional drunken UWEC student who hasn't known enough to avoid it. Medium to large rivers and drinking just don't play well together.
a) there is always the macho guy, college-age (yeah, yeah and older)"it will never happen to me" attitude, so they like to push the limits - especially after a long visit with JD.
b) i heard the point that guys have to stand to pee and girls dont so therefore it is more likely for the guys to lose their balance.
c) i personally was out one night after a HEAVY college nite bender and had a friend fall down the bank.
it may be a statistical anomaly that the frequency of incidents may be higher there than other "river bank" schools.
But just because we want a sinister explanation as to why kids are dying, we shouldnt overlook the obvious.
I once stayed at the Courtyard by Marriot that is right on the Mississippi River in LaCrosse in the shadow of the bridge and the river was right outside my patio. I mean walk 6-8 yards and you would walk right into the river. no rail of any type that I can remember. I also remember the downtown drinking establishments were only blocks away. I wouldnt rule out a serial killer giving some people a helping hand into the river. But I lean more towards the blind drunk guys falling in and getting sucked down river in the current. Has any female student every been lost up there to the river?

I am curious how you see this playing out Phel. Do you think that there is a guy who hangs around in the shadows and pushes drunk college kids in the river?
Because from what I know of the history of these cases, they all are shown to have significant BAL's, and no fowl play is found.
And no foul play is found either. Though I do understand that La Crosse has a lot of ducks. Damn Blogger for not having comment editing.
